NINTH RESOLUTION TO ACQUIRE AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SITE IN NORTH PORTDescription On October 5, 2010, the Board approved the First Resolution, authorizing the acquisition of numerous small parcels for a future elementary school in North Port. This Ninth Resolution approves the seventh batch of contracts for this acquisition.
Recommendation That the School Board approve the Ninth Resolution of the School Board of Sarasota County, Florida, RE: Acquisition of Property for a Future Elementary School in North Port, Florida.
10. SETTLEMENT OF CLAIMDescription Approval of the Settlement Agreement will resolve all claims against the School Board on the terms stated including the plaintiff executing a release in favor of the School Board.

11. APPROVAL OF THE AMERICAN CROSSROADS GRANT PROPOSAL TO THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION FOR THE CURRICULUM DEPARTMENTDescription
COMPETITIVE: Grant funds of $993,000.00 will allow the Curriculum Department to provide American History teachers with professional development to achieve the following objectives: Increase teacher content knowledge in American History that address national, state, and local history standards to improve student learning; Increase teacher ability to foster historical thinking in K-8 classrooms; build a sustainable system of collaborative, professional development that is responsive to the changing education requirements and the needs of district students.
Funds will pay for professional development opportunities (including travel, books, materials, space rental), contractual services, personnel and benefits, indirect costs, and external evaluation.
Recommendation That the School Board of Sarasota County approve the American Crossroads grant proposal.

FIELD TRIPS
12. APPROVAL OF THE PINE VIEW SCHOOL SPEECH & DEBATE FIELD TRIP TO WASHINGTON, D.C., ON MAY 27, 2011 THROUGH MAY 31, 2011Description This is a competitive Speech and Debate team which competes in ten separate events at each tournament. Students compete in speaking contests and earn membership privileges in the Catholic Forensic League, Florida Forensic League, and National Forensic Leagues.
Recommendation That the Pine View School Speech & Debate field trip to Washington, D.C., on May 27, 2011 through May 31, 2011, be approved.
13. APPROVAL OF THE SARASOTA HIGH SCHOOL SPEECH & DEBATE TEAM FIELD TRIP TO DALLAS, TEXAS, ON JUNE 12, 2011 THROUGH JUNE 19, 2011Description
This is a competitive Speech & Debate team which competes in 10 separate events at each tournament. It is connected directly to the Speech & Debate courses offered at Sarasota High School as well as the National Forensic League, National Catholic Forensic League, and the Florida Forensic league.
Recommendation That the Sarasota High School Speech & Debate team field trip to Dallas, Texas, on June 12, 2011 through June 19, 2011, be approved.
14. APPROVAL OF THE RIVERVIEW HIGH SCHOOL KILTIE BAND FIELD TRIP TO HONOLULU, HAWAII, ON DECEMBER 3, 2011 THROUGH DECEMBER 8, 2011Description Students participating in the 70th Commemorative Mass Band Event will have the opportunity to be a part of a once in a lifetime event commemorating the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The historical significance of this event as a part of our U.S. history will be an important experience for the students. There will be actual survivors from the day of the bombing that the students will see and hear speak. There will also be a tour of the USS Arizona memorial.
Recommendation That the Riverview High School Kiltie Band field trip to Honolulu, Hawaii, on December 3, 2011 through December 8, 2011, be approved.
15. APPROVAL OF THE PINE VIEW SCHOOL FIELD TRIP TO NEW YORK, NEW YORK, ON APRIL 27, 2011 THROUGH APRIL 30, 2011Description
Students have presented a paper to the Moody Math Mega Challenge. They are one of six teams to make it to the final round and they must travel to New York to present their paper.
Recommendation That the Pine View field trip to New York, New York, on April 27, 2011 through April 30, 2011, be approved.
EXPULSIONS
16. APPROVAL OF EXPULSION CASE NO. 11-388Description On March 24, 2011, the student listed in Expulsion Case No. 11-388, violated School Board Policy 5.322, Prohibition Against Use, Sale, or Possession of Alcohol or Drugs. It is the recommendation of the Superintendent that the student be expelled from the Sarasota County Schools until June 7, 2012.
Recommendation That in accordance with provisions of Sections 1006.07(1)(a)(b), Florida Statutes and School Board Policy 5.34, and the holding of a hearing having been waived by the student/parent, the recommendation as specified in Expulsion Case No. 11-388, to expel the student referenced therein from the Sarasota County Schools, be approved effective immediately for the remainder of the 2010-2011 academic year, the 2011 summer session, and the entire 2011-2012 academic year.

On May 6, 2010, the student listed in Expulsion Case No. 10-477, violated School Board Policy 5.34(1)(d), Theft. It is the recommendation of the Superintendent that the student be expelled from the Sarasota County Schools until June 10, 2011.

APPROVAL OF CLASSIFICATION OF INOPERATIVE EQUIPMENT AND FURNITURE AS PROPERTY TO BE DELETEDDescription The custodians of the property (cost center heads) have certified it to be traded in on new equipment, unaccounted for, not repairable or otherwise inoperable. Property still on hand after reallocation will be salvaged for any useful parts and then sold at auction.

APPROVAL TO AWARD BID #11-0050 FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION UNIFORMSDescription Bids to provide 'Middle School Physical Education Uniforms' were received from eight vendors on March 16, 2011. The bid of The Incentive Mall was the best overall low bid meeting the advertised specifications. Reasons for not selecting the apparent low bid are included with the bid tabulation. This bid is for a period of one year with the option to renew for two additional one-year periods. The funds for these purchases are contained in the internal account budgets of the schools.

APPROVAL OF AMENDMENT #1 TO ARCHITECT'S CONTRACT FOR THE LAUREL NOKOMIS HVAC RENOVATION PROJECTDescription The scope of work for this amendment is twofold; one, to add mechanical and electrical engineering design services to replace all of the air handling units and some of the condensing units for Building #15 and two, to provide interior design services to modify Reception Area #101 in Building #1.

APPROVAL OF NON-EXCLUSIVE UTILITY EASEMENT AT VENICE HIGH SCHOOL BETWEEN THE SCHOOL BOARD OF SARASOTA COUNTY, FLORIDA, AND FLORIDA POWER AND LIGHT COMPANYDescription This easement will assign an easement for the construction, operation and maintenance of underground electric utility facilities (including wires, cables, conduits, and appurtenant equipment) to be installed from time to time; with the right to reconstruct, improve, add to, enlarge, change the voltage, as well as the size of and remove such facilities or any of them within an easement ten (10) feet in width. This easement has been approved by the School Board attorney.
Recommendation That the Non-Exclusive Utility Easement at Venice High School between the School Board of Sarasota County, Florida, and Florida Power and Light Company, be approved as presented.

The Construction Services' Change Order(s) are summarized on the enclosure for ease of review. These change orders collectively total a decrease of $1,016,611.30 in gross contract dollars.
Included in these change orders are $952,608.65 credits for Direct Material Purchases; the corresponding Direct Material Purchase Orders of $887,979.99 result a net of $64,628.66 in sales tax savings.
